In the face of rapidly intensifying protests and the thousands expected to gather at the Universal Oneness event Madison Square Garden on Saturday, August 29th, the Hindu American Foundation issued a security advisory, urging all attendees to maintain civility and avoid confrontations with protestors.
It also called on Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who himself spoke out against the event, to uphold his sworn duty to protect everyone in New York City on Saturday, whether event participants, protestors, and anyone else living, working, or visiting in the vicinity, regardless of their national origin, religion, or politics.
HAF is fully committed to free speech and takes no issue with groups such as Savera and others expressing their opinions about this event, or protesting it. They have as much right to do so as the event organizers and attendees have to assemble and express their views.
A question of transparency remains, however.
Savera presents itself as an independent research coalition, with Hindus for Human Rights as one of its core member organizations. If Savera and HfHR want to have a discussion on transparency, compliance, and ethics in public advocacy, the following documented facts should be noted:
- HfHR’s cofounder and executive director Sunita Vishwanath, cofounded Hindus for Zohran and Hindus for Human Rights Action (501(c)(4) during the 2025 mayoral campaign and is listed in the New York City Campaign Finance Board’s public database as a financial campaign bundler for Zohran Mamdani, claiming she was “not employed.”
- HfHR is the recipient of New York City taxpayer funding, announcing in 2026 that it received a Community Project Grant of up to $10,000 from the New York City Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes to engage in community organizing.
- HfHR is the lead organizer of the counterprotests and grassroots lobbying campaign against the event, as well as in pressing Mayor Mamdani to intervene against the event. Curiously, Vishwanath’s deep institutional relationships with both the Mayor and the City of New York were not mentioned in her widely circulated recent public appeal on social media.
Given this, HAF asks:
Is New York City taxpayer funding for organizations like HfHR being used for political campaigning, grassroots and direct lobbying, or protests targeting the Hindu American community?
What, if any, coordination occurred between these organizations and the Mayor’s office, prior to Mayor Mamdani speaking out against the event?
Has the Mayor’s office assured event organizers that the safety of attendees will be taken as seriously as the safety of counterprotestors?
Will the Mayor commit to representing all New Yorkers, not just his political allies?
