COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISORY

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, was arrested in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, Illinois. This incident underscores the serious threat that anti-Indian hatred and white supremacist extremism can pose to Hindu American communities. With Hindus across the country gathering for Garba, Navratri, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali, and other religious observances and community celebrations, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) urges temples, event organizers, and community members to remain vigilant, strengthen security measures, and proactively coordinate with local law enforcement.

HAF urges temples and community organizers to:

  • Stay vigilant: Remain aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity, threatening messages, or concerning behavior to law enforcement.
  • Engage local law enforcement: Contact your local police department ahead of religious gatherings and celebrations to discuss security concerns, request guidance, and explore security assessments.
  • Consider private security: Larger temples should consider hiring, licensed and trained private security personnel during worship hours and major religious gatherings, in coordination with local law enforcement.
  • Review security protocols: Assess entrances and exits, visitor access, lighting, surveillance, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Prepare staff and volunteers: Ensure everyone understands emergency procedures, knows whom to contact, and is prepared to respond to a potential security threat.
  • Communicate responsibly: Share verified safety information with congregants and event attendees. Avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that may cause unnecessary alarm.

Take threats seriously and report suspicious activity and potential threats promptly to local law enforcement. Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to life or safety. Do not confront a potentially dangerous individual yourself.

Hindu Americans deserve to worship, gather, and celebrate their faith without fear. As our communities come together for sacred observances and cultural festivities, vigilance, preparedness, and coordination with law enforcement are essential.

According to reports of the arrest, the investigation began after a coworker alerted authorities to disturbing electronic communications, including images of firearms and tactical equipment and an alleged manifesto outlining plans for mass violence. The alleged shooter went into the temple premises and attempted to open fire but his rifle was jammed. Investigators also reportedly found expressions of white supremacist ideology and hostility toward people of Indian descent.

Authorities reportedly recovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armor, and other tactical equipment during a search of the suspect’s residence. The alleged plot is under investigation, and the specific intended temple has not been publicly confirmed.
