The collection of traditions that compose modern-day Hinduism have developed over at least the past 5000 years, beginning in the Indus Valley region, in what was the largest civilization of the ancient world.
Hindu tradition holds that all people have a third inner eye. The two physical eyes are used for seeing the external world, while the third focuses inward toward God. The red dot is a reminder to keep God at the center of one’s thoughts.
