HAF is issuing this security alert in light of recent events in Canada, where the Khalistani extremist group, Sikhs for Justice, held rallies outside Triveni Mandir in Brampton, Ontario, and Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey, British Columbia on April 5, 2026. These incidents highlight the ongoing concerns surrounding Khalistani organizing that features violent rhetoric and its impact on Hindu communities across North America. We want to ensure that our community here in the United States feels informed, prepared, and supported.
In recent years, there have been growing concerns about an increase in Khalistani organizing across parts of the United States and Canada, with reports of vandalism, intimidation, and harassment targeting Hindu temples, community institutions, and Indian-origin individuals in North America. What is happening in Canada is not isolated. It reflects a broader pattern of coordinated activity intended to intimidate and silence Hindus that our community must remain vigilant about, particularly around temples, cultural events, and community gatherings.
What You Should Do
- Be safe. If you feel threatened or unsafe, leave the area and call 911 immediately (not the non-emergency line) so responding law enforcement treats it as an ongoing emergency. Your safety is what matters most.
- Be vigilant. Pay attention to your surroundings, particularly at temples, community centers, and public events. Report anything suspicious to local law enforcement.
- Do not engage. If you encounter individuals making provocative or threatening statements, do not engage or participate in any altercation.
- Record incidents. If you witness something concerning, record it safely. Video footage and documentation provide critical evidence that law enforcement can use to identify perpetrators and take action.
- Keep a record. Note the date, time, location, and names or descriptions of individuals involved in any incident. This information is invaluable when filing a report.
Build Relationships with Law Enforcement
We strongly encourage community members to proactively connect with local law enforcement ahead of time. Community-based policing works best when relationships and communication are already established. Kindly consider reaching out to your local police department to inform them of upcoming Hindu festivals, temple events, and community gatherings, and to request a visible law enforcement presence where appropriate. Building these relationships now will help ensure a faster and more effective response if an incident occurs.
If you witness or experience a hate incident, contact law enforcement immediately. For additional support, guidance, or to report an incident to our team, please reach out to us at Online form. We are here for our community.
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and stay united.
