Washington, DC (December 17, 2018) — In reaction to today’s conviction of Indian National Congress party leader, Sajjan Kumar, by the Delhi High Court for inciting crowds to kill Sikhs in the 1984 pogrom, HAF Managing Director Samir Kalra remarked:

“The conviction of Sajjan Kumar, who played a leading role in instigating violence in the anti-Sikh pogrom in 1984, is a watershed moment in the long quest to deliver justice. It’s now time to hold accountable all others responsible for the violence, once and for all.”

Kumar, along with three others, Captain Bhagmal Singh, Girdhari Lal, and former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar, were sentenced to life in prison, while Kishan Khokkar and former member of the legislative assembly Mahender Yadav were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In the violence that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi more than 3000 Sikhs were killed.
