In my new exciting role as the Midwest Regional Director for Hindu American Foundation (HAF), one of the first assignments I took up was the recognition of our Hindu American communities through HAAAM and Diwali proclamations.
After several months of outreach on the road, in cities across Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin, I am happy and excited to report that 35 cities have made Diwali and/or Hindu American Awareness and Appreciation Month (HAAAM) Proclamations.
These Proclamations were all sincere and well-deserved tokens of appreciation/shot outs for all that the Hindu American community has done in these cities, in fields ranging from education and science, to law and medicine and technology — These Proclamations raised the Hindu American Awareness from ground level. In Midwest Region – Chicago, Land of Swami Vivekananda majority of our Hindu community was unaware of HAF existence. I was able to develop 32 local working groups.
The proclamations also raise awareness about rising Hinduphobia across the nation.
This remarkable achievement is the result of weeks of outreach, meeting with local community groups, nonprofit organizations, many temples, linguistic groups, and local elected officials and representatives. In total, nearly 32 local organizations lent their assistance.
I am very thankful to the many community leaders who helped receive proclamations — being made across several city councils. Some evenings we were fortunate to receive multiple proclamations! The well-coordinated efforts with many local city officials and community members made it all happen.
When I set out on this journey, I never imagined that I would travel 2749 miles for HAAAM and Diwali Proclamations in my first initial months with HAF. My family told me I am going really crazy with this work! I remained focused and I got more energized with the power of Goddess Durga! I am thrilled and humbled that I am able to demonstrate professionalism while raising awareness and working with various groups and different communities.
One very unique experience I want to share: On Oct 12th mid-afternoon, I received a call from the Bartlett, IL Mayor’s office and the office requested that they have set their agenda to start with a Vedic invocation on Oct 17th. This was an incredible experience; I truly had goosebumps. I sincerely felt that I am blessed to serve and promote Hindu Dharma!
During my travels in Brookfield, WI, Bloomington, IL, Troy and Lansing, MI I had excellent experiences with local groups. Local families were very happy with the work we were doing and I am very thankful to them for hosting and treating me as their own family member. We exchanged so many thoughts and learned from each other.
We urge you all to use these proclamations to spread awareness about Hindu Dharma in your local neighborhoods, schools and workplaces.
